Keeping appliances clean with thorough brushing between the gums and brackets, flossing, and using mouth rinses are the best ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy during your treatment. Electric toothbrushes and water flossers are excellent supplements to at-home oral hygiene maintenance. Above all though, the technique and frequency are more important than the technology. Regular visits to your general dentist are still required throughout your orthodontic treatment.
We generally encourage each individual patient to follow a healthy, low sugar but normal diet that suits them best during orthodontic treatment. However, try to minimize crunchy or sticky foods that will break or get stuck in the appliances. Please remember, any type of food hard or soft can cause appliance damage if not careful.
Foods to Avoid:
Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots
